Common Questions

Flower on FingertipWhat is a life coach?  What does a life coach do?

A life coach is a mentor who walks along side you and talks with you, asking the tough questions and giving honest feedback, facilitating clear thinking and encouraging positive change. Personal life coaching with me involves completing life evaluations, worksheets and assignments between sessions to help you get in tune with your true values, goals and desires – then participating in candid one-on-one conversations; seeking perspective, growth, encouragement and accountability to help you live according to your purpose.

What is the difference between professional life coaching and traditional counseling and therapy?

Traditional counseling and therapy generally focus on diagnoses of conditions and working through the past to discover why you are the way you are. Life coaching, on the other hand, focuses on the present and the future. Coaching assumes that the client is emotionally and psychologically stable; ready to take his or her life to the next level. It is a mutual agreement between two people in which a person with specialized training and life experience comes along side the other in an attempt to help, encourage, advise and lead.

Coaching is a big commitment.  How will I know if I am ready to make it?

The person who will benefit most from personal life coaching is the person who expects to put forth personal and genuine involvement in the coaching process. You are ready to commit to coaching if:

  • You are tired of the way you are living now
  • You want to see your life transform in magnificent ways
  • You want help setting realistic goals and would benefit from gentle accountability
  • You are ready to start living your life and stop planning on living it!

What is the difference between Christian coaching and spiritual or New Age coaching?

Spiritual and New Age coaching generally center around “self”. This type of coaching aligns itself with New Age thinking, considering “self” a god, and does not uphold the teachings of the Bible. In contrast, Christ is at the center of Christian coaching and focuses on living the life God created you to live, finding fullness in Christ and living in accordance with His true values and beliefs. It seeks to align your plan with God’s, not the other way around.

What if I am not a Christian but I want to be coached?

I will always coach from the perspective that each person is a unique creation of God, created with a specific purpose, and it is my ultimate hope that all my clients eventually find the true peace of God. However, I do not push Christian beliefs on anyone. I am happy to work with people who consider themselves Christians and those who do not. I will not judge the way you live and I will support you in your decisions. As long as you are committed to the process with me, I will be committed to you.
